Westfield Outdoors - Internship
Westfield Outdoors was a very eye-opening experience for me. The physical work environment was very friendly. The smaller office was not too overwhelming, and the people I worked with were very inviting and open to questions. It was different from school in the sense that it gave me a lot more real-world experience, and I was urged to ask questions and think more creatively, not always finding just one answer.
My supervisor loved having us (Me, Josh, and Rodney) around, as we brought a splash of fun with us. They enjoyed the work that I did, and the diligence that I did it with. I think that one of my biggest strengths as an intern was my drive to get the work done in a timely manner, and with the highest quality of work that I could produce. My biggest weakness was simply my lack of previous experience with that type of work. Although I had gained a fair bit of experience from the projects that we did in ignite, I still felt as if, in respect to the job, that I could have gotten just a bit more.
The only thing I wish I could have done better was becoming motivated at the beginning of the internship, because we didn’t really love the work that we were doing, so we didn’t have much motivation to get it done, yet once we finished that first project it became really fun.
I can’t include pictures, per the NDA I signed, but one of the larger projects we worked on was creating an audit of Westfield’s product selection. This was essentially going around to the local supermarkets, and retailers to look at all of the products that were Westfield’s, and taking note of key features, prices, and competitors. This was something that hadn’t been done in almost 10 years, and was very critical in helping to get a full picture of their product selection in anticipation of the upcoming line review for Walmart stores.
I did end up meeting the goals I set for myself, which was just to learn more about the business community and its aspects. I learned a lot of more real-world applications for excel and was able to provide meaningful contributions to the team at Westfield. Overall, I think I learned a lot about myself, but most importantly, I’m very much suited for data analytics. I am still planning to pursue my degree in Political Science to become a lawyer, but if I decide later on that I want to switch directions, I know where I’ll be heading.
